A major part of my project on glow-worms is to learn how to help them best, and also to tell others how to help those in their areas. I am VERY lucky - I have the last few surviving members of a glow-worm colony in my own garden! They have been there for at least 40 years; probably longer, but I've not been able to check back further. Sadly though, they are all that remain of what was once a large colony that lived along my roads, and in the adjoining fields and gardens. Over the next few weeks, I will be gathering and publishing the results of my work in my garden, hoping to discover what helps the most. My major aim must be to increase their supply of food - snails and slugs.
Until I have more details to include on this page, the most important thing to remember is to try not to disturb the ground where the glow-worms are any more than you can help. If they are underground in holes, they will not be able to burrow out if the holes collapse. Remember too, never to use slug pellets. At best, they will kill the glow-worms food, and at worst, a glow-worm could eat a poisoned snail, and so die.
Remember most of all that glow-worms are declining in this country, mainly because they are losing habitats, and being killed by insecticides or herbicides. They need our protection!
Glow-worms have lit our paths for thousands of years! Now it is time for us to light THEIR paths - to their future!
